Hello,

a church is being offered for sale in our area. Is it possible to convert something like this into a residential house with a reasonable financial effort? What kind of material is typically used on the roof? What should be carefully checked during a viewing?

Change of use must be considered: such a change needs to be applied for and ultimately approved as residential space. Just because a church is sold, it does not mean the purpose of the consecrated building can be changed without permission.

Personally, I would probably not feel comfortable in such premises, whether new or old, small or large, modern or elegant.

I would be careful not to let Jesus become his flatmate 😉

That wouldn’t just be bad. Water turns into wine, leprosy, blindness, lameness, and numbness disappear, instead there are parties with free charity, self-righteous Pharisees no longer dare to call the sheriffs, and when vacuum cleaner salespeople ring the doorbell, he throws them out of the temple. So, there are worse shared apartments. Or did I misunderstand something? K..

In the UK, it is common to repurpose churches. Much depends on the interior finish and what will be preserved.

I have stayed in some beautiful ones (Capper Kirk Selkirk is also suitable as a family home). Unfortunately, there aren’t many pictures available.

There are also supermarkets (Spar in Oban), galleries, and pubs (Finnegans Wake) located in churches.

You can definitely feel comfortable there.

The effort is only worthwhile if you are truly in love with the property. Then you will have the strength to deal with various challenges—such as a window placement that suddenly no longer seems optimal once the rooms are planned, heating, insulation and installations, restrictions, and requirements...

A project like this is appealing to friendly, lively, hands-on, confident, and patient individuals with some financial flexibility. I find that—just like such people—interesting and great.

When there is no longer a state church law to mediate conflicts between fire protection and heritage conservation, you can learn the difference between profane and trivial ;-)

There was one "more" too many :-(

Haha, that would be funny if you were only allowed to use your house for preaching ;-).
By the way, I meant “profane” in a figurative sense – for Protestants the buildings are not formally consecrated. Still: as long as it is a church, no weather vane crows about the fact that it actually stands well above the usual ridge height 🙂
