Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build a kitchen island using the METOD system from Ikea and want to focus on high functionality and stylish design. My challenge is to combine the modules in a way that not only provides plenty of storage space but also includes practical features like integrated waste sorting, extendable work surfaces, or even a hidden power strip. Does anyone have experience optimizing METOD kitchen islands to be both visually appealing and truly practical for everyday use? I look forward to tips on smart layouts, material combinations, and possibly suitable accessories or custom modifications that enhance the island character without limiting flexibility.

Does anyone have experience with a specific cabinet depth that works particularly well for electrical installations like these?

I have had good results with 60cm (24 inches) deep METOD cabinets, especially those 80cm (31.5 inches) in height. This leaves enough room at the bottom for drawers and equipment, while the countertop still comfortably overhangs. The metal frame from Ikea also allows for easy mounting of power strips on the inside of the cabinets. Additional fastenings to the countertop and possibly cross braces help increase stability.

It is also important to ensure proper ventilation around the power strip to prevent heat buildup, especially with larger devices.

Great advice from everyone! I just want to add that a well-designed kitchen island is a lot of fun! 😊

For my island, I used a combination of open shelves, drawers with smooth soft-close slides, and a fold-out work surface. This significantly increases the workspace when needed.

And believe me, a stylish look doesn’t have to come at the expense of functionality – I managed to combine both. Make sure to harmonize colors and materials, for example, white fronts with a wooden countertop. This makes the island look modern and cozy. Good luck with your build!
