Hello everyone,
I managed to get an old empty wine barrel from my local winemaker. I placed a glass top on it with foam strips (actually removable table leg pads) between the barrel rim and the glass. As you have probably noticed, this solution is not exactly the safest 🙂.
Do you have any ideas on how I can secure the glass top more safely?
Best regards,
Dirk

But there are good glaziers out there. Otherwise, I would order the glass panel online as tempered safety glass (ESG) with pre-drilled holes. That works quite well and isn’t too expensive.

I wouldn’t just place them loosely on top.Why not? It’s quite common practice! @DirkAmBau I would consider whether glass fits with the old wine barrel. Of course, that’s a matter of personal taste. But perhaps placing a matching glass inside the recess would look better visually (blending the barrel and the surface) than placing it on top with an additional material (support) and an artificial overhang.

Why not? It’s quite common! That might be true for a household of retirees without children, but as soon as there are kids in the house, I wouldn’t place a loose glass top on an old wine barrel. But of course, everyone can do as they please.

But well, everyone can do as they please. What are you talking about? If you’re worried about safety with children around, then don’t get a barrel at all—it could tip over—and don’t use anything made of glass, since it could break. Glass has a significant weight, so it’s stable enough!

Glass has a significant own weight, that’s normal! So a round glass top with a thickness of 8 mm (0.31 inches) on a wine barrel weighs about 14–16 kilograms (31–35 pounds). So just laying it loosely on top won’t work.

That simply doesn’t work by just placing it loosely on top.Is reading not your strong suit either? I didn’t write anything about “placing on top,” but rather about “putting inside.”
