Dear forum,

You have probably heard this question many times by now, but we really need your experience since we are building for the first time.

What still causes major uncertainty for us is the budgeting for the exterior landscaping. We are planning to pave 70m2 (750 sq ft) for the driveway leading to the property in the Wennigsen Hannover area. In addition, the path from the driveway to the main entrance (7m / 23 ft) and a small platform will be paved. Everything is standard – simple concrete paving stones in anthracite color will be sufficient.

Next up is the double carport and 250m2 (2,690 sq ft) of turf and a 35m2 (377 sq ft) terrace. How would you roughly estimate the costs? Do you even have good contacts with Polish contractors or reliable local companies?

Are the following costs realistic?

Double carport 6x5 m (20x16 ft) and a small shed including installation = 12,000 euros

Paving work including driveway and terrace = 15,000 euros

Turf (roll-out lawn) = 5,000 euros

The plot is fairly flat without major elevation changes.

We look forward to your assessment.

If you add a contingency buffer, that should be achievable. If necessary, you can also help out yourself. We paid 7,000 euros last year for 40 sqm (430 sq ft) of paving. For the house entrance with a landing, we paid 5,500 euros, and for a 45 sqm (484 sq ft) terrace with ceramic tiles, we paid 10,500 euros. So plan for around 20,000 euros and it should work out.

It really depends on how much soil you still need to bring in. The rolled turf itself should be doable for 2,000 euros. But there’s much more to it: lawn edging, flower beds, trees, hedges, etc. You might be surprised by all the additional costs. Better budget around 10,000 to 12,000 euros for the “garden” item.

Do you have a supplier you would recommend?
All the quotes we have received are at least twice as much... Most are around 30,000

You should be able to find the kit with a bit of online research for around 5,000 to 6,000 (with a steel roof). Assembly by a general handyman (caretaker or landscaper) at about €100 per hour gross (which is rather high for such companies) shouldn’t cost more than €4,000.

I would be surprised if it takes more than 40 man-hours in total.

I can’t recommend a specific supplier, as I still have that to figure out myself, but this is the kind of material cost I’ve found when searching. I will probably do the assembly myself.

Ah, OK. To be honest, we haven’t really looked into a kit home yet. Thanks for the suggestion.
