Good day.

We want to install a 3m (10 feet) wide hanging sliding door in the living room. Now the question is whether it should be divided into two or three sections. The general contractor said that a two-section door might be difficult to open because it involves moving a heavier weight. What are your experiences with this?

I don’t understand the concern: a total width of 3 meters (10 feet) – that is, two sections each 150 cm (5 feet) wide – is still quite manageable for a lift-and-slide door. I would even advise against widths under 2.5 meters (8 feet), as I consider that borderline impractical. The question remains: why was this particular design chosen in the first place? Is there already any visual of how the house is going to look?

Tall cabinets are generally a standard 3m (10 feet). I find your general contractor’s comment a bit odd. We have 4m (13 feet). That’s not particularly unusual and works without any issues. Our 5-year-old can open them, but our 3-year-old cannot. And definitely choose a two-part door (by the way, I’ve never seen a three-part one either); having a larger opening is actually one of the advantages.

Okay, thanks. I will just try to see it live somewhere and test it.

We have two large lift-and-slide units, each 5 meters (16 feet) wide, in our new build... So a 3-meter (10 feet) unit is really nothing unusual. Currently, we have a 3-meter (10 feet) unit, and we wouldn’t want to be without it—we definitely consider it the best decision we made in our older building...

Right now, we have a 3-meter (10-foot) unit, and we wouldn’t want to be without it anymore—definitely the best decision we made in our older home...

How did you divide the 5-meter (16-foot) units? Do you need a lintel or header for structural reasons?

@Seven1984: I just saw some pictures of your construction site. I like it a lot . Do you have reinforced concrete lintels above all the windows (for insulation on top)? Or are those roller shutter boxes?
