Hello everyone,

Our tiler has almost finished his work. Although, in our opinion, we have a very good tiler, there is still quite a bit of tile waste remaining.

This tile waste is what’s bothering me. After all, we chose our desired tiles and paid a high price for them, and now X square meters of tiles will need to be discarded.

I have been thinking about how to make good use of part of the leftover tile pieces. Most of the tiles have a rough texture rather than a smooth finish.
My first idea was to use them for a barbecue area or possibly partly for the terrace. The tiles would be laid similarly to natural stones—like a bit of a puzzle. However, after consulting various members of my family, this idea was rejected.
My father suggested that all the tile waste be crushed into granules and used as “tile gravel.” I have some reservations about this. On the one hand, I imagine that the tile gravel might have sharp edges. On the other hand, it still seems like a waste of the expensive tiles.

But what else can be done with the leftover pieces? I’m hoping for practical and creative suggestions from you all. So, feel free to share your ideas.

I wouldn’t desperately try to find a use for the "waste." Just take it to the recycling center...

The tile installer should dispose of the normal waste material. However, we hardly had any left because most tiles were laid in a random pattern.

Whole tiles are stored in the farthest corner of our attic, in case a tile breaks later due to drilling, dropping an object, etc.

We will also keep plenty of each tile type in stock. The tile supplier will take back other unopened packages (except for the bathroom floor tiles, which were a discontinued model).

If we had obtained the tiles through our general contractor, the tile installer would dispose of the waste cuts. Since we bought the tiles ourselves, we are responsible for disposing of the leftovers.

Due to the tile pattern (texture and color), only the living room could be laid in a random pattern. All other tiles were laid in a neat, orderly manner—so the waste cuts are larger here. I’m not concerned about forcing reuse, nor about the $15 (per ton) fee I have to pay at the recycling center for debris disposal. That cost is unavoidable anyway since other materials must be disposed of, too.

I just believe there are surely ideas and options (which I haven't thought of yet) to give these larger leftover pieces a meaningful second use.

A much-praised trait of us (native) East Germans: we don’t immediately throw everything away but consider whether there are sensible uses for it (turning “trash into treasure” was an important mindset in a non-abundance society). Well – unfortunately, I’m still missing the spark of inspiration here.

So this is a question to our user community.

Hello f-pNo,

would it possibly be an idea to cover a counter or table with the tile offcuts?

Before everyone "stones" me, I’m not a fan of the "tile table owners’ association" either, but for an outdoor counter (barbecue area or similar), such a tile surface (if the tiles are frost-resistant) wouldn’t be a bad idea, I think...

Regards,

Dirk

Or a mosaic table? The tiles would just need to be nice ones.
Or maybe a litter box for rodents? I think some rodent houses are made with tiles for that purpose.
Otherwise, maybe just try googling; there are surely many craft ideas using tiles.
