HilfeHilfe19 Dec 2024 12:51Hello,
I have a silly question. Because of the pool and sauna, our annual electricity consumption is between 6,000 and 7,500 kWh per year.
I understand that we will then receive a smart meter. Now my neighbor told me I need to be careful because variable tariffs are linked to it, and I would have to do laundry in the evening or at night because electricity prices are supposed to be lower then (at least in theory).
Is this how it works, that heavy electricity users are forced to save this way?

Jesse Custer19 Dec 2024 13:18The type of electricity contract you have is currently decided solely by you.
We also have one of these (mandatory with solar) and still pay a fixed price per kWh.
Conclusion: The neighbor is talking nonsense based on the current legislation.

I understood that we would then receive a smart meter. Is that already the case? I thought it would start only from 2025?
Apart from that, it’s still possible that you won’t get a replacement right away (all households MUST be equipped by 2032) because grid operators have to meet certain quotas. It might be that there are too many potential or voluntary participants, so you might not be included yet.
Nothing has happened for me either—I’m now in my third year with over 8,000 kWh grid consumption, a heat pump, and photovoltaic system.

No. It’s the other way around. You must be offered variable tariffs, but nobody forces you to use them. So it’s more like an advantage for you.
