ᐅ Comparison of Internal and External Insulation: Is External Insulation Significantly Better?

I am going to renovate a roughly 100-year-old four-sided farmstead. I love the old bricks and would like to keep them on the main house, which currently has no insulation at all. However, I am starting to have doubts. Based on the information I have gathered so far, exterior insulation is significantly more practical, easier, less expensive, and more durable than retrofitting interior insulation. Is this correct?
If so, after insulating, the facade would probably end up as a classic smooth finish (unless I add another, costly brick wall in front).

Best regards,
Karl

Thank you for the responses. The suggestion from @11ant is excellent. I also planned to start with sandblasting and repointing an old shed wall (only for visual reasons, without any intention for heating or insulation). This way, the energy efficiency inspector can immediately see everything I did wrong on the exterior wall, and the work on the old house would be the second attempt, so "for a friend." And thanks as well for the tip about sealing.

That was from @Philfuel in post #17 ...

@11ant You don’t want to take credit for someone else’s idea? But it still belongs to you, because I was referring to your suggestion to ask the "energy saving commissioner" for an assessment in SU. 🙂

You misunderstood me: SU is clearly more than 50 km (30 miles) from DA, and such travel radius limitations are usually serious, especially for qualified professionals. However, I think you should consult him regarding the installation of your interior insulation, which would require him to travel to DA at least once. Further matters could then be handled via video conference or similar. But I doubt an on-site visit would be cost-effective for him (although I have personally served clients with longer travel distances—but only at additional expense, which fewer than one client per year is willing to cover; hence probably his stated travel radius).

You can also check if the IG Bauernhaus has contacts in your region. They can often recommend skilled craftsmen and energy consultants.
