Hi everyone, generally I really enjoy attending trade shows. I like the feeling of being there in person, and I appreciate having things shown or explained to me. I have attended all kinds of trade shows, not necessarily related to construction, gardening, or interior design. I have also been to a book fair, a career fair, and a bike expo. I think it’s a great way to gather ideas and get an overview of what’s available in a certain field.

Nowadays, some trade shows also take place virtually. It seems like this has become more common since the pandemic, and I think it’s a good alternative when attending in person is not possible. Hybrid trade shows combine both aspects. I haven’t tried this format myself yet, but I could imagine it working well.

Here’s the situation: a close friend and her husband plan to start building a house within the next few years. They would like to attend a home building trade show to get ideas and gather information in advance. It might make sense for them to look for a hybrid trade show. Would that be worthwhile, or should they just get their information on-site in person? Regardless, I’m interested in hearing experiences from others. Maybe someone here already has some insight and can share their thoughts. Thanks!

Yes, it offers quite a few useful possibilities when you can digitally participate in shaping a traditional trade fair. Syma has described quite well on the blog how such an exhibition stand might ultimately look. I also believe that this approach will continue to be effectively used even after the pandemic, whenever that may be.

In some areas, I already see a significant advantage, but not every sector will be able to implement this. I’m thinking of sports trade shows, food exhibitions, even auto shows, which mostly rely on direct contact. People want to try everything out, touch it, see it in real life…

For the B2B sector, it’s certainly helpful, but it remains to be seen whether end customers will accept it. I can imagine product presentations or instructional videos being done this way. The question I have is why do this at trade shows and not just on social media?

If I make videos related to house construction, I always do it and hopefully not only when attending trade shows. It could be good for customer retention, but that’s probably a different topic.

I also think a hybrid approach could work in the areas you mentioned. Having both components allows you to try things out on-site and then take another virtual look at home. Purely digital might not be enough, but especially at trade shows for cars, a lot can be demonstrated and explained virtually as well. Sports equipment can also be effectively presented and demonstrated virtually. I definitely see potential there. Even at food trade shows, I can imagine virtual showcooking sessions taking place.

Yes, certainly, that is true to some extent. For the B2B sector, it is definitely a great solution. In that case, you don’t necessarily have to travel or even fly to a trade fair. This way, you could attend multiple trade fairs instead of choosing only the largest ones.

For the B2C sector, however, it must be said that people probably attend trade fairs to experience products firsthand. This is particularly important in some industries. Information can also be found online. Therefore, a hybrid solution would need to offer added value. Providers must develop a concept that distinguishes itself from the other offerings available on the internet. How exactly this looks will likely vary from one industry to another.

In a hybrid setup, there is the opportunity to experience things on-site directly—touching, smelling, and tasting. Additionally, digital elements can complement this. This approach could certainly be interesting for some in the B2C sector. Of course, information can be found online, but it’s still a different experience when something is presented at a trade fair. Digital doesn’t necessarily mean reading through material; it could also involve presentations or live demonstrations when a device is showcased. I believe that if a company exhibiting at the trade fair implements this well, it could lead to some truly exciting results.

However, I can only get a hands-on experience when I am physically present. As far as I know, there is currently no way to do this online. For some industries, it is very important for me—and certainly for other customers—to see, touch, and try everything in person.

Hybrid solutions will have their benefits, but it’s necessary to consider who these solutions are suitable for. I do see potential, but not for everyone or every situation.

If you’re unsure whether it will be useful for you, I would strongly recommend consulting a professional exhibition builder. They should have practical experience and can tell you whether it offers real value. So, in this respect as well, it’s better to seek professional advice.
