Hello everyone,
we are building a KfW 40 house with a Viessmann Vitocal 200-S heat pump and an 8 kW photovoltaic system.
The heat pump is also capable of cooling. The upgrade would cost 1000 € (only the heating installer, thermostats extra).
Is it generally worthwhile to cool using the heat pump? Just because it can does not necessarily mean it is practical.
How fast does a room cool down? Underfloor heating systems are usually quite slow in response.
Or does it make more sense to invest in an air conditioning system and operate it with the photovoltaic system on hot days?
Thanks and best regards

- even though the effect is obviously amazing when you’re sweating and then step into the cool air. After the initial hype became routine, we now set the device to about 23°C (73°F) and let the rooms cool down more gradually. Also, we start cooling as soon as we notice it’s getting a bit too warm (usually around 26-27°C (79-81°F)), but then only for a short time until it feels comfortable again.Do you have a different kind of summer than we do? 😀
I think I can count the days I’ve actually sweat on one hand.
And if it’s 20°C (68°F) outside and 27°C (81°F) inside because of the window area (greenhouse effect), I’d just do a quick cross-ventilation for 5 minutes.
So basically, I follow your reasoning. And summers will get hotter again with longer heatwaves.
But I can’t relate to your experiences from this year here in Düsseldorf 🙁

Maybe not a different summer, but a different house?
It already got quite warm inside here several times.
At the moment, I’m also missing insect screens everywhere for airing the rooms quickly, and I’d rather use photovoltaic electricity than let a single mosquito into the house. I’m allergic, and a single bite tends to swell up to the size of a honeydew melon. 😀

May I ask how much the air conditioning system cost?
Did you build with Viebrockhaus?
