ᐅ Commissioning a photovoltaic system and charging an electric vehicle.

Hello everyone,

Our photovoltaic system is scheduled to be put into operation soon. I have several questions related to this topic and hope to get some helpful ideas.

1. I am currently dealing with all the tax paperwork. Monthly VAT returns through Elster and so on seem relatively straightforward. Still, does anyone have a link, guide, or website that explains this topic clearly for beginners?

2. The topic of one or two meters for household and heat pump has come up here several times. For now, I have decided to stick with two meters. Since ideally, I want to power both the heating and household with the photovoltaic system, the PV vendor recommended a "power to heat" setup. Does anyone have experience with this and can offer advice? The electrician who will install the system soon was more cautious and wanted to cover only household electricity with the PV system. Which is better?

3. Now, this is a bit off-topic: Since my car has broken down, I am considering getting an electric vehicle. Does anyone have experience with how well charging an EV through the photovoltaic system works? In winter, of course, it’s probably less effective since the car won’t be at home during the day. The wallbox is already ordered. However, I am still unsure whether this makes sense. The car would stay in the garage continuously on weekends, so there should be enough hours to have it fully charged by Monday.

4. Now this is even more off-topic: Since house construction and the upcoming outdoor landscaping are costly, an unplanned vehicle purchase hurts the budget a bit. Since I want to keep my reserves untouched, I’m considering leasing an electric car. Thanks to environmental incentives, the monthly costs should be relatively low. I had an appointment at a dealership yesterday. When I compare their offer with those online, there are sometimes very large differences. Common leasing platforms also offer deals from dealerships, but often cheaper than the local dealer. Does anyone know why there are such differences and whether online offers are reliable? Has anyone leased a car online?

Thanks and best regards

Hope you applied for the subsidy before ordering the wallbox

Yes, I applied for it two months ago. As I heard, the funds are probably exhausted. But everyone who applied (and got approved) still receives the subsidy. So, lucky me. I’m going with an SMA unit since the rest of my system is also SMA. I wanted to stay consistent. It’s rated at 22kW but will likely be limited, so it qualifies for the subsidy.

Back then, I found the GTE on a leasing deal platform and then contacted several VW dealers. I only got outrageous offers in return—except one dealer almost next door who accepted the online offer from Bavaria.

I’ll do the same then. Why not? Either yes or no. You have nothing to lose and nothing to give away.

First of all, it’s very likely you only need to submit advance tax filings quarterly (for one year, then yearly afterwards).

I thought it was monthly for the first two years? Maybe I’ll have my tax advisor handle it all. He says he already has fixed deadlines for other clients and the fees would be minimal. Still, it won’t hurt if I get familiar with it myself.

It’s very likely that the household’s regular electricity consumption will be enough to use all the solar power generated by the photovoltaic system.

Can you set priorities for what gets powered first? With the few sunlight hours in winter, it would make sense to use all the solar energy for the heat pump since no one is home anyway. Of course, I want to run larger appliances like the washing machine and dishwasher only during the day. But maybe someone else has experience with this.

I like the vehicle, if only the range were greater (I drive about 40,000 km/year).

That’s true. My goal is to fully charge the car over the weekend. It will hardly be used on weekends, about 90% parked. That way, I can cover at least three days of commuting to work. The rest I can manage by carpooling. For all family trips, we would use my wife’s company car.

And the lease payments are unbelievable.

Maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned, but leasing has always been a taboo for me. The idea of paying $250–300 per month (and that’s for a rather small vehicle) just to rent a car makes me uncomfortable. If I think about the payments for higher-end vehicles... For me, a car is just a means to an end. Although it does have to be comfortable, of course. 🙂

Didn’t you say monthly payments for the first 2 years? Maybe I’ll have my accountant handle all of this.

Only if they charge very little. I submitted my preliminary tax return for Q2 recently. I didn’t time it exactly, but it took less than two minutes. I only adjusted one figure.
At my tax office, it’s quarterly for just one year. About five years ago, during the last submission, there were still 12 monthly reports before switching to annual filings (same tax office). But I’ve heard from many others that only four preliminary returns are required in the first year now.

Is it possible to set priorities for which payments are covered first?

I don’t care, since having two meters and all the related equipment is just too expensive for me. Basically, whoever feeds electricity from the photovoltaic system first, gets their power first. You can probably control this a lot – but then you’d need control technology, which costs money.

For that, you get a new ID3, which isn’t small inside at all. Fully family-friendly. Maintenance included. What more could you want?

Grey VW ID.3 Pure Performance in the picture, leasing offer and price info next to it.

This is usually just a regular retailer behind it. There’s nothing suspicious about that. However, I feel that local dealers often make downright outrageous offers to private customers.

But that seems counterproductive. You always have to be careful with online offers. The super amazing deals often come with some kind of catch. Still, the "normal" online offers are often significantly cheaper.

Of course, it strongly depends on the vehicle and the mileage. Private individuals often have to bear these costs.

You are not up to date anymore.
As a private individual, you can lease a microcar starting from 100 euros, and as a business owner (which you will soon be, with photovoltaics), you can get a compact car for 50-60 euros, sometimes even for zero euros (thanks to subsidies).

For 250-300 euros, you can get a microcar on full lease, including maintenance and insurance. You only pay for fuel.

@nordanney was faster and even gave an example. Is that for private or business use?

It says in the screenshot: For private customers only.
