Hello everyone,

My wife and I started building our own home last year. A friend pointed out that I need to install a water filtration system for a new build. My question is: Do you have any experience with this? Does the filter have to meet specific requirements? My thinking is: If I have to install it anyway, I might as well do it properly and get a water filter that can really remove all contaminants. (Possibly for future children.) I would really appreciate any ideas, suggestions, or advice!

Greetings from Ostwestfalen,

It is only meant to filter out suspended particles and sand grains.
In my opinion, nothing more is necessary.
German drinking water is among the best monitored worldwide.

Thanks @T_im_Norden for the quick reply! Since we are already on the topic, I did a quick research yesterday about drinking water. Although the water quality in Germany is really good, I am a bit concerned about microplastics and nitrate because the property is located somewhat remotely near agricultural fields. Especially when it comes to my children, I worry about the nitrate contamination. I have looked into various drinking water filtration systems and feel a bit overwhelmed by the options. What do you think about them? Can you recommend something?

Do you have or will you get your own well?
If not, you will receive your water from the municipal water supply, which can be located many kilometers (miles) away.
Every water utility provides the option to check the water quality, often even online. Just find the one responsible for your area and take a look.
If you do have a well, you will definitely need a well contractor who can install a system tailored to your specific water conditions.

What contaminants are actually present in your water? That way, you can make an informed decision—which will most likely result in not needing a water filter.

Another example from my own experience (renovating a two-family house from the 1960s): During the pipe replacements, I asked my plumber about a water/backwash filter. He (and a second provider) both said they would be happy to make money, but would not actively recommend it with normal water quality.

I would also like to point out that it is possible to overprotect. Children who do not come into contact with dirt may be more likely to develop allergies and get sick more often.
