ᐅ Decentralized ventilation – various manufacturers

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are currently building a house. After much consideration, we have decided to install a decentralized ventilation system (we definitely did not want a centralized ventilation system). Since the electricians are on site right now, it would make sense to have the wiring installed at the same time. However, we don’t want to rush into this and prefer to take a closer look into the topic first.

There are still so many unanswered questions... So I thought I’d register on this website and try my luck in this forum. I hope you can help me.

We were recommended companies like Senertec, Maico, Viessmann, and Dimplex. Has anyone had experience with decentralized ventilation systems from these manufacturers (quality, maintenance, can you notice the air exchange?, are these ventilations noisy, etc.)?

I was told we should choose honeycomb fans. Why? What are the advantages compared to other types of fans?

Today, I already called the heating contractor to ask if he could provide a quote and what price we should expect. He said about 10,000 euros for 4 fans! Isn’t that a bit expensive?

I hope you can help me out a bit.

Best regards
Yours, Nikolaus

Hello,

I am also interested in this topic. Clearly, the central system is the "more perfect" solution, but it is also more expensive and complex.

For me, the decentralized solution offers the advantage that I can install the fans myself. I can choose specific rooms that should or need to be ventilated. Retrofitting in existing houses is also easily possible. Because of all these factors, a decentralized system is usually more cost-effective. Therefore, I think if the budget is limited or if you want to retrofit to minimize the risk of mold, decentralized ventilation is definitely an option.

Is there a specific reason why you are so AGAINST decentralized ventilation systems?
Yes, because they are not very effective! On the other hand, that is a misunderstanding. In a single-family house with, for example, EW, this type of decentralized ventilation can actually make sense. As always, it depends on the specific conditions.

Your question is completely pointless. You have made your decision, paid for it, and now you have to live with the result. What good does it do to you that a central mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery would be better overall? – Absolutely nothing! You should have informed yourself beforehand!

You don’t get lasting quality for free. "Cheap" solutions usually only help those looking for cheap options, which they often realize after some time, but then changes are hardly possible. You have to live with the compromise!

With adequate planning and sizing, even a central controlled ventilation system can be managed to keep costs within limits. However, the overall building design has a significant impact on the total effort.
Knee walls, cavities in timber beam ceilings (such as bottom chords in open-web joists) offer potential that others can only dream of in their calculations.

Hello Nikolaus,

if you follow that statement consistently, it would also mean giving up a kitchen, since mold, fungi, and bacteria can also accumulate there – just look at the restaurant inspector Rach as proof.

If I don’t clean my kitchen, I have to live with the consequences – similarly, if I don’t properly maintain my ventilation system, I will have to face the consequences there as well.

Hmm, a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery is not a heat generator...
But such a system gives me the assurance that no mold will develop inside my walls!
I prefer to clean my system regularly and protect myself from mold both in the ducts *and* throughout my entire house.
However, if I were already assuming now that I would not even keep my system clean...

But that is just my personal opinion on the topic of (de)centralized mechanical ventilation.

Is it really? If so, why? As far as I know, there are also decentralized systems that are linked through a control unit.

Thank you.
I can understand that there are disadvantages in terms of airflow, but the energy consumption does not necessarily increase. Looking at the products from a manufacturer in Berlin, they have very low power consumption. I am currently considering what options are suitable for me. In a recent offer from a house builder, the price difference is 6000 Euro between a central system with heat recovery and a decentralized system with heat recovery, due to a nice side effect. That definitely makes you think. Tomorrow, I will have the opportunity to take a look at a decentralized unit to get a better idea of it...
