Hello everyone,

Has anyone here completely landscaped their garden by themselves? If so, did you rent or buy a mini excavator? If you bought one, which model did you choose?

A front loader is not suitable for earthmoving, and you can’t use it to dig a trench either. But everyone has to decide that for themselves. Just look at how much these machines cost new; they are definitely not cheap. That also explains why renting one for 30 euros a day is unrealistic...

You don’t use heavy machinery for that either, as it compacts the soil too much.

But of course, it depends on what you want to do. 20 cubic meters is not a large amount; it took two of us, both office workers, two days to spread 10 cubic meters of topsoil by hand. With an excavator, even a small one, it’s done in no time. The excavator was only used for one full day to build up the site; otherwise, it was used with a ditching bucket for trench digging.

I think we had the small excavator for a total of five days. What do you plan to do for 30 days?!

The new prices really surprised me. There isn’t actually much to these machines.

It’s better to borrow and have fun. It’s not proportional. And who among us has 5000 sqm (54,000 sq ft)?

We discussed this here on the street, there are about 10 of us building... Just share it.

But seriously, while I occasionally need a plate compactor for 10 to 30 minutes (and buying one definitely pays off), renting a mini excavator like that doesn’t really make sense. I’m paying €120 per day including insurance, trailer, and fuel. How many days would I need to rent it for?

Excavation work can usually be done in one focused day and then finished. For example, Boels has a weekend deal where you pay for 2 days and get 3, and since those machines are quiet, you can even work on a Sunday.

Alternatively: check with Jansen. A front loader—does that mean tractor? Jansen has cheap excavators that fit on a three-point hitch.
