ᐅ Watercat Cube – Recommendation / Experiences with Water Softening Systems?

Hello everyone,

In our future house, the water hardness is between 23 and 25 dH. I have spoken with some people from the new development area, and many are having a water softening system installed directly. I have done some research online, but honestly, I am a bit unsure. Many people strongly recommend salt-based systems, but what about something like a Watercat Cube? Does a system like that work with my water hardness?

Our monthly average is only 6m3 (7.9 cubic yards).

That means 6 x 0.7 = 4.2 kg (9.3 lbs) of salt per month, so about 50.4 kg (111 lbs) per year. That equals roughly 2 bags, costing around 17€.

6 x 54 liters (14.3 gallons) = 324 liters (85.5 gallons) of wastewater.

Additionally, there is 120€ for maintenance, so the total estimated annual cost is about 150€ all in.

Thank you

Well, you probably shouldn't really drink it.

You can certainly still drink it. Many mineral waters have sodium levels well above 200 mg/l (200 mg per liter). One fairly well-known example from Bad Überkingen even exceeds 1000 mg/l (1000 mg per liter), and you can definitely taste that.

Sodium-containing foods and beverages (including drinking water) are said to potentially raise blood pressure in sensitive individuals and may be a contributing factor to hypertension. Furthermore, waters with particularly high sodium content are not suitable for preparing infant formula. This is why there is a limit set in the drinking water regulations.

We also have very hard water (>20°dH). At the beginning, I tested 0°dH once. However, there was a slight salty aftertaste. Since my wife drinks a lot of green tea, she noticed this negatively. Now it is set to 7°dH. I am not worried about microbial contamination because the flow rate is very high and it is regularly flushed with salt.

Congratulations. Hardly anything less trustworthy.
Just the salt consumption of 25 kg (55 lbs) per month alone. Others last with that for half a year!

Have you tested these already?
We are now the fourth homeowners in our circle of acquaintances who installed this on recommendation. We have had it for only one year, others for just over 7 years, and we are all very satisfied! The salt consumption is actually a bit more: 25 kg (55 lbs) in 8–10 weeks, softening from 25°dH to 5°dH, 4 people plus 1200 m² (12,917 ft²) garden (which is also watered with softened water).
So, what exactly was untrustworthy about it again?
Everyone always says these water softeners are miracle devices. Meanwhile, the process is so simple that anyone can understand it. The only expensive part of such a system is a good resin cartridge. The rest is gimmicks (no one needs a colored touch display) that you unnecessarily pay for with brands like Grünbeck and BWT.
We are very happy with this “untrustworthy” thing.
