Since my budget is quite limited, I have been reading more and more about container homes. What do you think about them? Does anyone here have one? When people hear "container home," most initially think, "Hmm..." but if you look around online (I’ve attached an example image from Google), you can really see some impressive results.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how difficult it is to handle the connections and insulation of these homes, or how durable they are. But if it works out, you could start with a small basic house and then add one or two containers in the garden to work on yourself...

If you also put some effort into the exterior appearance of this type of building, it could become a really nice little house, don’t you think?

Flying Space by Schwörerhaus comes to mind, but I’m not sure if it’s the perfect solution. How much do you expect your house to cost? Keep in mind that since it is steel, insulation will be challenging, and it will likely heat up during the summer as well.

Exactly, that's also where I have already looked around.

Hmm, okay.. but if insulation is applied from the outside, I'm not sure how much it will heat up if the sun does not directly hit the steel... Insulation plus wood cladding? The budget would really be very limited.. 60,000-80,000 (currency not specified)... I have already heard quite a bit of criticism about that, and I also know myself that it is a small amount and will be challenging.

Given your budget, I think the idea is actually quite good. I did a bit of research online and found various solutions. I suggest you take some time to look into it yourself. Definitely consider exploring this approach further.

I also searched again for used houseboats in Berlin. There are options available there as well, some well within your budget.

Of course, these are all compromises, but it’s likely that something can be realized in this direction – after all, others have had the same idea and successfully carried it out.

Best regards,

If you adjust the facade design a bit, this building could become a really nice small house, couldn’t it?

Well: you have to like the look, otherwise it’s easy to waste a lot of money. Not to mention the patchwork and amateurish work on the exterior walls.

Personally, I like the design, and yes: there are also houseboats with a similar appearance.

At least those only need a mooring spot in a harbor or waterfront area – container homes, on the other hand, require a plot of land where this construction type is allowed by the building permit / planning permission. And that will be very difficult in residential zones; it’s more likely to be permitted in industrial areas.

A houseboat wouldn’t be for me—I definitely want a nice terrace with a grill and a garden area for my dog. The house itself is less important^^ I need a small living unit with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping area^^ insulated and connected to the utility networks. I even sit on the terrace in winter to eat and play with my dog, etc. (at the moment, unfortunately, I only have a tiny balcony -.-)… That’s why I really like the container solution. Once I’m more financially stable, I could simply order another module and add an extra room.

But when it comes to approval, it’s a tricky question—who do I need to ask to find out if I’m allowed to build a container home there? Another problem is financing. Okay, the savings bank, etc., would finance up to 180,000 for land plus house (if only there was a house like that xD), but a container home? That’s difficult…
