ᐅ Yellow stains on a white wall – can they be covered with white paint?

Hello, I hope you can help me.
My girlfriend and I recently moved into our first shared apartment. Since neither of us are big fans of yellowed, poorly applied textured wallpaper, we removed it, and her brother, who is a mason, applied a decorative plaster finish to the wall. Now to the problem: in some places, yellow stains are showing through the wall, but these mainly appear where there are wooden beams underneath. My brother-in-law suspects that the previous tenants smoked heavily in the living room (this is the only area affected), but none of us are certain. Is there a way to permanently hide these stains under white paint? The building is an older property. We still have several renovation tasks ahead and would prefer to avoid unnecessary steps in order not to get "stuck" on one room for no reason.

Hi Cutepie!!!
Well, I can’t really say exactly what kind of stains these are. Maybe you could remove them by chiseling, but whether that still makes sense once everything is finished is up to you.
You could isolate the remaining stains. One option would be to spray them with a stain blocker (isolate), or secondly to chisel off the plaster and replaster.
Best regards.

Hello,
***** What are these amateur DIY tips supposed to be? Chipping off plaster again and spraying walls with a spray bottle. The stains could of course be from nicotine. In that case, simply painting over with a nicotine-blocking primer would be enough. I assume the spots only appear where the beams are, so probably some oily stains from wood preservatives, wood stain, or oils are bleeding through. Get some quick-drying renovation paint from a professional paint supplier—that should solve the problem.

Hello Tommy!!

DIY tips??? You’re quite something *lol*
But of course, I find your approach the best, and luckily you probably knew the exact cause of the problem on site. Unfortunately, my imagination doesn’t go that far, but I can only learn from it…
Best regards

Thanks first of all for all your tips.
I couldn’t respond earlier because I was quite busy with the renovation and work. We have now applied a primer/sealer and painted over it again. The yellow stains have not reappeared so far (the painting was done 2-3 days ago), and I hope they stay gone.

Thanks again, I was really worried I would have to get used to those stains, especially since our previous tenant seemed to have given up fighting them and just painted the walls yellow.

Best regards, cutepie.
