Hello everyone,

I received a new front door last Tuesday. Unfortunately, it’s the wrong one.

The door is wrong in terms of the glass design; the brand and door specifications match the order exactly. The door is a standard size.

During installation, my father-in-law was present but was not informed about the door design. My wife was briefly there as well at the start of the work, and she knows the design, so she could have intervened. Of course, she didn’t notice it during the five minutes she was on site, or she wasn’t aware. The order confirmation was issued for the correct door, and the invoice also lists the door we ordered. The wrong (installed) door usually costs €60 (about $65) less than the one we ordered.

I have the following question:

We can basically live with the wrong door since the functionality is fine and only the design differs from what we wanted. However, I would like a discount because I did not receive the door I ordered, nor the correct one.

I would now suggest to the installer that he:

1. replaces the door (since it is a standard size),
2. or gives us a discount since we have to accept the door as is.

What would you consider a fair discount? The door cost €3000 (about $3200), and installation was another €200 (about $215).

Do you think this proposal is realistic, or could he legally insist that my wife was present (even if only for five minutes) and therefore effectively accepted the wrong door (even though it was never discussed)?

Basically, the installer can consider the new front door as accepted since your wife raised no objections; thus, the work is deemed approved.

I would have a personal conversation with the contractor and see what can be worked out. In principle – if I understood correctly – only the door panel needs to be replaced. If it is a reputable company, you should be able to find a solution, since these businesses also rely on recommendations.

Kind regards

So, we spoke with him, and he said that "it was not his fault," meaning he ordered the correct door from the supplier, but the wrong one was delivered. He didn’t notice this himself (well, okay, since they install doors every day, I understand that he might not clearly remember which door was ordered for which location). Anyway, he now wants to check with them what can be done and get back to us... let’s wait and see!
