We are planning our terrace and are leaning strongly towards a wooden deck. Now we are looking for suitable types of wood. So far, we are considering oak. Of course, we do not want tropical hardwoods, but at the same time, it shouldn’t start to rot after just three years. What wood have you chosen and why?

A wooden deck is never permanently durable (not comparable to a stone terrace), but this is due to the German climate and not the type of wood used: in Norway, you can find untreated wooden decks that are 50 years old, regardless of the wood species.

Using highly toxic and dark wood preservatives (which were formerly used to treat railway sleepers, for example) might work even here, but no one wants to sit on that. It smells unpleasant when the sun shines on it, is hazardous to health, and may even be illegal.

I don’t see any clear advantage of Walaba over teak, Ipe, Bangkirai, Cumaru, Garapa, Bongossi, Kebony, etc. For good reasons, nothing from overseas is going to be used.

Thanks for the tips on thermally modified pine and the installation. The terrace will be partially 4m (13 feet) deep, partially 2m (6.5 feet), and about 11m (36 feet) wide in total. Maybe laying the boards perpendicular to the house makes sense here. It should definitely be easier that way. I will still use smooth boards without profiling.

@Mottenhausen What’s the main difference in climate between Germany and Norway? Although both countries have very different climate zones.
