What are your thoughts on this? We definitely know that it will be a wooden staircase, preferably in a dark shade. (Walnut or ash with black oil finish also looks stylish). Due to the almost unlimited options of wood types, colored oils, or stains, we are currently not quite sure which direction we want to go...

What should be considered when oiling is that it enhances the wood’s natural character
What exactly does that mean?

It’s simply like wetting the wood. The wood darkens. When you oil it, it stays that way.

We have oiled oak to match our parquet flooring. We still really like it.

The oiled surface also makes the staircase non-slippery.

We have painted the stairs and even after 7 months and several furniture moves, there are no scratches. However, the steps are covered with transparent anti-slip tread plates. We like them because they prevent slipping while keeping the wood visible.

We are currently also looking into the staircase and different types of wood. We want dark wood—what about stained beech? Are there any long-term experiences regarding wear and tear?
