Hello everyone,

maybe someone has a tip...

We have a staircase made of beech wood with a dark stain.
During the construction phase, the steps were always covered with cardboard, with a piece of painter’s fleece on top.
There were also areas on the steps that were not covered but were not walked on either, such as along the edges or in the corners.

After removing the protection, it turned out that the staircase has no damage, but the uncovered areas are lighter in color.
It looks as if drywall dust somehow settled there.

Unfortunately, the stains do not come off with water or soapy water.

Does anyone have experience with this, knows if it really is dust, and how to remove it?

Thank you!

Try using wood oil

I will take a look, thanks! But isn’t wood oil normally used to seal the surfaces? Because that’s the case with the staircase, which hasn’t worn down yet.

How long were the uncovered areas exposed to sunlight? It might simply be the normal color adjustment—light wood darkens over time, dark wood fades.

I would say about 3 months.
But I don't think that's the cause, because it is also somewhat patchy in places.

Maybe dust settled on it temporarily, preventing fading in certain spots, which creates the patchy appearance. Either have a professional take a look at it or wait about six months; by then, it might have evened out somewhat.
