Hello everyone,
In our newly built apartment, we had wood-look tiles installed throughout the entire living area except for the bathroom, with 2mm (0.08 inch) grout lines. When ordering the tiles through the builder, we chose and confirmed a matching grout color in writing—a nice brown shade, exactly like the tiles. Despite a further discussion with the tiling foreman, the gray grout color we selected for the bathroom was used throughout the whole apartment.
The mistake was admitted in writing yesterday, along with the statement that nothing can be done about it now. I am absolutely not satisfied with the color and would prefer to have everything redone completely.
Do I have the right to demand this in this situation?

Really? Did you buy the house along with the land?
Or is it more that you built on your own plot with a general contractor and are also the owners, and additionally hired the tile setter as an extra (to install floor tiles in the living area)? It is a condominium that we bought.

He tried to convince me that the grout color was the better choice. You can’t argue about taste. My personal opinion: grout in the same color - your expectations wouldn’t have been met. When tone-on-tone is attempted and it doesn’t work, it looks terrible. That’s why a contrasting grout is strongly recommended for tiles. Tone-on-tone grout is almost never used.

There really is grout color available, take a look at it.
I think the compensation of 5,000 euros is unrealistic. Demand 2,500, accept 1,000, and buy a grout pen yourself... I agree—only, I’d test the grout pen on a very inconspicuous spot first.
Take the money and cool off.

hanghaus202319 Jul 2025 09:01I have now looked at the pictures. It looks great. Matching tones is not something you do.
However, I would still demand a remedy for the defect in order to at least receive a discount. Only the courts and lawyers benefit from a lawsuit.
I have no idea about the grout color. But I wouldn’t accept it. It is a poor job anyway.

Give a little excuse and let every guest who visits you appreciate the excellent choice of tiles and grout color. Most people would lie to you if they said tone-on-tone looks great 😉
