ᐅ Wood-look tiles grouted with the wrong color – should the entire job be redone?

Hello everyone,

In our newly built apartment, we had wood-look tiles installed throughout the entire living area except for the bathroom, with 2mm (0.08 inch) grout lines. When ordering the tiles through the builder, we chose and confirmed a matching grout color in writing—a nice brown shade, exactly like the tiles. Despite a further discussion with the tiling foreman, the gray grout color we selected for the bathroom was used throughout the whole apartment.

The mistake was admitted in writing yesterday, along with the statement that nothing can be done about it now. I am absolutely not satisfied with the color and would prefer to have everything redone completely.

Do I have the right to demand this in this situation?

No, the tiler kept quiet today about giving a quote.

Well, as already mentioned – the tiler is not the one you make any agreements with (for corrections or compensation).
He was there to assess the situation, and it would have been a good opportunity for you to ask the specialist what could realistically be done and what effort it would require.
But most likely some arrangement is already underway behind the scenes; otherwise, he wouldn’t have come for an inspection – your point of contact is the builder, and the tiler’s point of contact is also the builder...

What he referred to was grout color. However, he rather advised against cutting it out, etc. That was not a topic. He tried to make grout color appealing to me as the better option.

He tried to convince me that using grout color was the better option.

Well, then it’s clear what was going on behind the scenes. The tiling supervisor knows he would have to pay for any repairs if you want that.
The developer knows this as well and has informed the tiler.
The tiling supervisor checked it and understandably promoted his gray grout—to avoid the extra work.

I admit, I hadn’t thought that far ahead yet.… We’re going to use the weekend to think about what to do and see what the developer says on Monday.

Really? Did you buy the house with the land included?
Or is it more like you built your house with a general contractor on your own plot and you are also the developers, and in addition, you hired the tiler as an extra (laying floor tiles in the living area)?

There really is grout color, take a look at that.
I think compensation of 5,000 EUR is unrealistic. Ask for 2,500, accept 1,000, and buy a grout pen yourself...
