Hello everyone,

I am interested in which devices you currently use on your LAN/WLAN and what, in your opinion, will be common in homes/rooms in the future—perhaps things I haven’t even considered yet. Feel free to relate it to specific rooms or floors.

As an example, take the washing machine, which in the future might also be connected via LAN/WLAN.

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

A brief list of what I currently have connected in my network: router, switch, NAS, Raspberry Pi (Pi-Hole and Unifi Controller), Homematic CCU2, network printer, Unifi access point, Alexa, PC, tablets, smartphones, TV.

What might be added in the near future: surveillance camera, video intercom, inverter, wallbox (EV charger), Fire TV Stick or Chromecast, gaming console, internet radio, robot vacuum cleaner, and more.

Looking further ahead, I generally expect household appliances to become more connected (although there are already some smart appliances, I think the next or following generation will be truly smart). Recreational devices like treadmills, bike trainers, rowing machines, etc. are increasingly online, allowing virtual training with or against others worldwide. All home technology such as heating, ventilation, weather stations. I believe in the future, anything powered by electricity will want to be connected to the network. Whether all of this makes sense remains to be seen.

To be well prepared for the future, I highly recommend installing empty conduits (ducts) in advance. This way, you can easily pull through whatever is needed, whether copper cables, fiber optics, or technologies we don’t even know yet.

The washing machine is nothing new anymore; connected or remotely controllable household appliances have long been part of everyday life. Even 10 to 15 years ago, they were integrated enough to notify users, for example, when a cycle was finished. However, this was usually not done via Wi-Fi but rather through other wireless protocols better suited for the purpose.

Here at home, everything that makes sense and adds value or convenience is integrated into the home network. This includes every window, light, switch, roller shutters, and thermostats.

...considering LAN/Wi-Fi... the coffee machine?

For me, there is still a beep when the washing machine/dishwasher or other device finishes, and I know when I started it. I don’t have that many devices running anyway.
I understand the development, but for most of these innovations, I can’t see any noticeable improvement in quality of life, so I’m asking.
I want to understand because if I see the real benefit, I’m the first to implement it. But with coffee machines, washing machines, refrigerators, I haven’t found that insight yet.
