Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am using it to store some of my books and binders. I noticed that the shelf seems to start tipping once it is fully loaded. The tendency to tip increases the more weight is placed on it.

My question is: Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the KALLAX shelf becoming unstable or even tipping when fully packed? I would like to understand whether this is a general problem with this shelf or if important assembly instructions or reinforcements might be missing.

I am mainly concerned about load capacity and stability during full use, and whether there are safe ways to reduce the risk of tipping, such as wall anchors or other measures. Thanks for your help!

Yes, this does happen sometimes. Always make sure to secure the shelf to the wall. Also, store the heaviest items in the lower sections.

Hello Foalisa,

a structured response to your question about the KALLAX shelf:

1. Tipping hazard: The KALLAX is basically an open shelf unit, framed by plywood or MDF panels, but in many versions without a back panel. This means an important stability component – the back wall – is missing.

2. Installation instructions: IKEA naturally recommends wall mounting, especially if the shelf is fully loaded. This mounting is not only important for safety reasons but also prevents tipping and increases load capacity.

3. Load distribution: Heavy items should be placed at the bottom, lighter ones at the top. This lowers the center of gravity and stabilizes the shelf.

4. Reinforcements: If desired, an additional wooden back panel can be added to improve stability. Alternatively, metal brackets can be used to reinforce the corners.

In summary: The KALLAX is not designed for standalone use under full load without wall mounting. This is due to technical reasons, as the design is rather open. If the shelf "tips," it is almost always caused by missing anchoring or uneven loading.

Hope this helps you.

I actually find this fascinating – how can something labeled by a global furniture giant collapse so easily once it’s fully packed?

The fact that the shelf can tip over actually highlights a design inconsistency: open shelving units are often not stable by definition if they’re not anchored. But IKEA markets it as a versatile piece of furniture suitable for almost any home.

Exactly. I would even say that if people think they can fully load a shelf without wall anchoring and expect nothing to happen – then maybe we need to be realistic that this is not a good idea. Sometimes the simple solution is the best one: secure the shelf. No magic. 🙂
