Hello everyone,

Since there has been an increase in break-ins in our area over the past weeks and months, we are currently considering installing a wireless alarm system in our house.

Does anyone here have experience with any of the available systems?

We would like to set up at least three circuits – one for perimeter security that can be active while people or the dog are inside, one alert line for the two garages, and a full arming mode with perimeter protection, motion detectors, and garage coverage when the building is completely vacant.

We appreciate any feedback or experiences you can share.

Best regards,

Dirk

Hello Dirk,

Along with the building permit / planning permission, we also received a notice recommending consultation with the police. There, we were thoroughly advised on security measures. Mechanical security always takes precedence over alarm technology. After all, the goal is to prevent burglars from entering the house in the first place, not just to detect them after a break-in.

The police recommend alarm systems only for securing valuables (for example, if you keep large amounts of cash or valuable jewelry at home). In that case, you also need to consider how the alarm response will be handled. If you rely solely on audible or visual alarms, you and your neighbors will have quite the challenge dealing with (inevitable) false alarms. Connecting to a private security company is expensive, especially with a 24-hour monitoring center.

I implemented this together with a friend in a clubhouse using RWE Smarthome. Motion detectors, door and window sensors, etc.
Remote control via PC and smartphone app. We also set up alarms to notify several people. Additionally, there is a siren and an outdoor light. The system can also be used for home automation tasks. At home, I rely on Homematic or plan to do so. I have not yet implemented security alarms with it.
