Hello,
I think this is the right subforum...

Has anyone had experience with self-adhesive solar control films that are applied on the outside of window panes? They come in different varieties.

We are looking for something like this for the windows in the children's room and bedroom, as it is already uncomfortably hot and stuffy in the evening due to the daytime sun. At the moment, we can still ventilate, which helps somewhat (the heat that furniture, floor coverings, etc. release then warms the room again), but in summer it will be really unpleasant.

Roller shutters are currently too expensive for us, as we don’t have the budget for them right now... The blinds we have inside do prevent the sun from directly hitting the floor, for example, and heating it up, but a lot of heat builds up between the blind and the glass and then radiates into the room. Our controlled mechanical ventilation system obviously can’t counteract this either, since it’s not an air conditioning system.

Hello,
in general, I can say that a foil like this – if it is of good quality – can block a significant amount of heat. We have such a foil at work on a relatively large window in a small corridor. Before the foil was installed, it used to get unbearably warm there. The foil has made a noticeable improvement.

Unfortunately, I cannot give you a specific recommendation (manufacturer, model).

Hello, it’s been a while, but the topic is still relevant!

Sun protection films provide the most benefit when applied to the outside of the glass panes. I can only speak from my personal experience with the films we use ourselves, which are high-quality Llumar films. These films come in various types. We apply the films exclusively on the exterior side of the glass.

On a personal level, I can share the benefits of sun protection films in relatively small children’s rooms in Frankfurt, where the windows face south. Before the windows were fitted with the films, the children could not do their homework in their rooms during summer. After the installation, that was no longer an issue. The blinds can remain open, and the sunlight no longer causes glare. An additional positive effect is glare reduction.
