ᐅ Interior Window Sills – Wood, Natural Stone, or Which Material?

Hello everyone, we are currently in the decision phase for which interior window sills to install.

We like wood the most, but we ruled it out due to cost.

We have a choice of various natural stones, mixed patterns, etc. Our windows are anthracite on the outside and white on the inside. The walls will all be white as well. On the outside, we will use slate window sills. Inside, we are simply unsure – if we choose white ones, will it be too much white?
Flooring: In the kitchen/living/dining area, we have oak planks, white oiled.
The hallways have medium gray 60 × 60cm (24 × 24 inches) tiles. The same tiles are in the bathrooms, and the bedrooms will most likely have laminate with an oak look. The photo shows our oak planks and the tiles.

What comes to your mind? What we don’t like are marble window sills with any kind of patterns. Right now, we are really stuck :-(

Thanks for any advice

Wooden board with visible grain lies on gray floor tile; label top right.

I also find wood the nicest, but what if the floor is already wooden?
We have classic gray granite, I like it, you can also choose a darker one.

Yes, if you look into stone and marble, you’ll see that there are nice options besides yellow marble.
Personally, wood would be too sensitive for me, even if oiled. After all, there will be flower pots placed on the bench at some point, and sooner or later you’ll get water stains.

I have no concerns about water stains, as I am always very careful. But you are probably right... even on oiled wood, water shouldn’t be left standing for too long.

We also used the same type of wood for our kitchen countertop on the work island with the sink. You do have to be careful, but it’s worth it to me.

We also have oak window sills. We paid just under €400 for 9 pieces in various sizes. They were cut to size and chamfered. We sanded and oiled them ourselves. I also installed them myself. We really like them, especially together with the oak parquet flooring and oak staircase.

I would also have concerns about durability if it comes from a cabinetmaker and would rather consult a commercial kitchen fitter (but be careful, the prices are on a completely different level – fitting for clinker bricks and king-size tiles @blaupuma).

11ant.

I understand your sarcasm.

You can get 60x60 cm (24x24 inches) tiles for as low as 25 euros per m² (about $25 per square yard).
If you ever build yourself, you’ll see what the market offers.
All kinds of nice options, from budget-friendly to commercial-grade.
And I guess you’ll also go for the larger tile.

Sky blue with yellow grout, haha. Just kidding: I like the tile size “long player,” but not the tile size “family pizza.” So, by now you should be able to paint a pretty accurate picture of my house based on all the hints about my taste.
