Hello everyone,

Our site manager and the building inspector disagree on whether and how the roller shutter guide rails should be insulated. We have brick masonry without external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS, also known as external wall insulation). According to the site manager, an APU profile will be installed on the outside, but the area behind it up to the actual window—including the roller shutter guide rail area—should not be insulated.

What are your thoughts?

Regards,

The expert should actually know ... What are the respective reasons and arguments?

What would it be like without roller shutters? 😉

I actually think so too.
Both stick to their opinions. I can’t really find anything online, mostly just about installing the windows themselves.
Nothing works without blinds... 😉

According to RAL standards, the roller shutter guide rail does not need to be insulated. However, it doesn’t cause any harm either. The important aspect here is that it is vapor-permeable to the outside and vapor-tight to the inside.

The construction manager said he could inject foam behind it and then install the APU strip afterwards. Would that work?

As long as the foam is approved according to RAL installation standards and it does not come into contact with sunlight unless it is suitable for that, then yes. But that would mainly be to ease your conscience. It does provide some insulation effect, but in the end, it probably won’t make a significant difference.
