ᐅ Buying Windows – Which Type and Manufacturer?

Hello dear home builders!

We are currently in the planning phase for the extension (adding an additional floor) of my husband’s parents’ house, and now we are facing the question of which windows to choose and from whom... Unfortunately, this is an area neither my husband nor I have any experience with. Of course, we are doing our research before purchasing, but I’m hoping for some support from those with experience.

I would like to know which windows you chose and why? How many chambers? Triple glazing seems like a must these days. Which manufacturers can you recommend (preferably from Austria)?

We don’t want to overspend, but I understand that windows are not cheap and should last for decades. The price-performance ratio is important.

What else should I pay attention to when selecting windows? And what should I include in the request for quotation?

Yes, that’s a lot of questions...
Thank you in advance for your answers! Best regards

In a vertical extension, there will likely be some windows that need to match the size of those on the floor below. Otherwise, you can save costs by using common standard sizes for the windows and limiting the variety of formats around them, such as lintels and other structural elements. A vertical extension means adding an upper floor, so there is generally less effort required for burglar protection compared to the ground floor (except for areas above garages, canopies, etc.).

Without knowing more details about the project, it is difficult to provide specific advice. For example, we do not know what the rest of the house (existing building) looks like and which materials would be suitable.

Great, thanks everyone!
It’s already helped me a lot!

Unfortunately, all these companies are based in Germany, Karsten... But from what I saw, Drutex actually has a distributor in Austria, so I’ll contact them. Thanks for the tips!

Best regards

So, we went with Internorm windows.
Great quality, and apparently made in Austria.
They were installed only recently, so no long-term feedback yet.

Price-wise, we considered alternatives from Unilux, but they were a bit more expensive with “lower quality” features.
We chose aluminum cladding and fully concealed hardware (for easier cleaning – WAF).
