We have purchased my parents-in-law’s house. Naturally, we have a few wishes regarding the exterior appearance.

We would like a window front in the gable on the south side. The house is 9 meters (30 feet) wide on this side. The roof has a pitch of 35 degrees Celsius (95°F).

This window front should not occupy the entire attic space. The top 0.5 meters (20 inches) is an attic crawl space and does not need to be glazed. The windows should start at about 1 meter (39 inches) in height for privacy reasons.

What price range would we be looking at for this? At most, two of the windows need to be operable.

Who would carry out such work? A glazier? A carpenter?

Hello, Floschy!

I think you might be underestimating the effort a bit:p.

So, I would start with an architect and especially a structural engineer. Then comes the wall demolition—usually not done by the glazier or carpenter, although you will need both of them as well.

That already brings us to the scaffolding company. Next are the patch repairs by the roofer. Then you still need the window sills, sealants, touch-ups on the interior plaster, painting work...

If there are any pipes or cables inside the wall, the electricians and/or plumbers will also be involved. I wouldn’t rule out some small jobs for the masonry trade and the drywall installers.

What about shading?

If you contract everything on an invoice basis, I would cautiously estimate the costs around 30,000-40,000 € (euros) 😱.
