Hi everyone!
One of our windows has a vertical crack! At first, our site manager said it was a stress crack. The window also no longer opened or closed properly.
A few days later, he backtracked and said it must have been caused by the exterior plaster or that children had thrown stones. So now he wants to shift the responsibility.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to take clear pictures...
The crack runs straight down vertically, and there is a small chip in the middle as well.
Thanks a lot for your help

I've never seen a crack like this when a pane breaks from a ball, stone, or anything else. What does the exterior plaster have to do with it? Aren't these his workers? He is supposed to deliver you a defect-free house. In the end, it shouldn't really matter who is to blame.... especially since the window already wouldn't open properly before, your general contractor's explanation is more than ridiculous.Hello,
I also cannot imagine any object that would cause such damage.
But aside from that, have you already had the house inspected/accepted? Or are you doing self-contracting? If it’s a general contractor and the house has not yet been accepted, what exactly are you supposed to do about it? It simply isn’t your problem.

Andreas

No, we are building with the general contractor. The final inspection has not yet taken place, but the site manager is pushing for an early inspection because his trades are almost finished, and we only have our own work left to do.
Do the known defects have to be fixed before the inspection? Or is it just a defect report that is created?

He can tell that to his grandmother, but not to any normal person.
It is a straight crack.

Hello,
Take it easy! The construction manager should first COMPLETE all his trades, and then he can get in touch again regarding an inspection. Don't accept anything that is only partially finished!
And make sure to record EVERYTHING, really absolutely EVERYTHING, still to be corrected in the protocol. No matter how minor or trivial it seems to you. And no matter how often the construction manager says, "yes, of course we will still take care of that... there’s no need to write that down."
Regards,
Andreas
