I have a very large garden and a somewhat unusual idea. Would it be possible to install a small wind turbine behind the house? I live in a very windy area and could definitely imagine that it might be worthwhile. Are there such small systems for home use, and can they really be cost-effective?

There are small wind turbines designed for home gardens, but these are generally not very efficient—based on the information I have. Since I am not very knowledgeable on this topic, I would like to share a free calculation tool from the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology as an example: If you install a turbine with a one-meter diameter at a height of six meters (20 feet) in a rural area, you can expect to generate about 38 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year at an average wind speed of three meters per second (6.7 mph).

By entering realistic wind speeds, you can calculate how much electricity the planned wind turbine would produce.

A single wind turbine isn’t effective; it simply isn’t enough. You need a whole number of these turbines installed. I also believe that the initial investment is not particularly cheap.

If the garden is large, several wind turbines can be installed. From a landscape perspective, I don’t find this very attractive. The building regulations of the cantons are also important.

This is meant to be taken as a joke. I firmly believe that a wind turbine doesn’t bring much benefit. There are high initial costs involved, and it might pay off in 20 years, if at all.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea. Wind energy from your own garden. The only thing is that you need a fairly strong wind consistently. However, wind turbines can also lead to disputes with neighbors. So it’s important to check beforehand whether it’s allowed.
