Hello everyone,

I wonder why assembling Malm furniture can sometimes be so complicated. The instructions are included, but they are often unclear and some steps are quite confusing. Also, the parts don’t always seem to fit perfectly, which can make the assembly a real test of patience, especially for less experienced people.

Does anyone have experience or tips on why this happens? Is it due to the furniture design, the included tools, or something else?

I would like to understand why there are so many reports of difficulties, even though the furniture is actually quite popular.

Hello georgesu,

I think that’s a great question! 😊 Malm furniture is actually quite practical and stylish, but assembling it can be really tricky.

In my opinion, the instructions are often the issue: they can be too brief or don’t show all the angles, so you end up wondering exactly where each screw goes. Sometimes you even wonder if you’ve been given a completely mismatched puzzle that doesn’t fit together at all.

If you persevere and everything finally fits, you almost feel like a pro ;-)

I would like to point out that the complexity of assembling Malm can also be strongly influenced by the limited tools provided by Ikea. Usually, these are just a simple Allen key and a small screwdriver, which are not ideal for all screws.

This results in the assembly taking more time and requiring more effort. Additionally, I would recommend using higher-quality screwdrivers or a cordless drill to better control the fit of the parts and thus avoid frustration.

Hello georgesu and everyone else,

I would like to provide a brief overview of the challenges when assembling the Malm:

1. Instructions: The pictorial instructions are quite minimalistic, which can lead to misunderstandings during complex steps.
2. Fit accuracy: Small manufacturing tolerances in the wooden parts can cause screws to require pressure to fit properly.
3. Tools: As mentioned before, the supplied tools are not always ideal.
4. Assembly sequence: If the order of the steps is not followed precisely, parts can quickly become inaccessible or damaged.

My advice: Sort all parts before starting and go through the entire instruction manual once without interruption. This helps avoid unnecessary searching during assembly.

I understand the problem well, especially since I don’t have much experience with furniture myself. The instructions sometimes feel almost like a puzzle to me, and when you’re not sure if you’re doing something right, it quickly becomes stressful.

The worst part for me is when you screw in something and realize that the piece doesn’t fit properly or you have twisted a part. Then you start doubting whether you are damaging the furniture.

I find it helpful to take breaks in between so you don’t lose patience, but of course, that only helps to a certain extent.

I can relate to that very well. For everyone who feels uncertain: it’s completely normal for a part not to fit as expected at first. Often, it’s due to tiny angles or possibly tightening a screw too early, which then prevents adjusting the spacing later on.

My advice: always tighten screws just finger-tight at first so you can still make adjustments afterward. Also, work calmly and in small sections—this usually helps everything fall into place.
