ᐅ Why do some BILLY doors not fit perfectly with the shelving units?

Hello everyone, I have a rather specific but currently relevant question: Why do some BILLY doors not fit perfectly with the corresponding BILLY bookcase? I have noticed that despite having the same model names and sizes, the doors sometimes fit differently – some don’t close flush, hang slightly crooked, or leave gaps where there shouldn’t be any. I am especially interested in whether this is due to manufacturing tolerances, material warping, or simply the installation system, which might require careful adjustments. Has anyone had similar experiences or even technical knowledge about how the production of BILLY doors and bookcases works exactly and where their weaknesses might lie? Thanks in advance for your insights!

Good morning everyone. I would like to share a generally recommended tip: Besides manufacturing tolerances, it is very important to follow the assembly instructions precisely. The BILLY hinges offer vertical adjustment options to compensate for height differences, as well as a horizontally adjustable screw to regulate the gap. Often, what appears to be a "misfit" is actually due to under- or over-adjustment. If the door sticks because of warping, lightly sanding the edges can sometimes help. However, I would recommend this option only as a last resort to avoid altering the original dimensions. If you experience different fits despite using the same models, this could indicate production variance, which IKEA usually aims to minimize. In practice, small differences are unfortunately common.

🙂 I think that slight variation in BILLY is actually part of its subtle charm! Sometimes the door fits a bit more loosely, sometimes tighter. It just shows that some manual fine-tuning is needed – you don’t get a shelf like this as a fully finished, high-precision kit. For me, a little bit of “playing” with the screws is almost like a small DIY project.

And honestly, who has perfectly even walls and floors? Often, the minor issues aren’t caused by the furniture itself but by the surroundings. That said, it is still frustrating when you’re aiming for a flawless appearance.

I have had similar experiences and encountered a combination of slight manufacturing variations and wood shrinkage due to changes in moisture. A useful tip: before assembly, lay out all parts side by side and check if, for example, doors are truly identical. I also had to return and exchange a door because it was warped – although this is quite rare, even with IKEA.

I’m just confused because the same set seems to fit much better for friends.

This could be due to shipping, storage, or different production batches. So having a bit of patience and willingness to make adjustments is definitely advisable. 🙂

A little patience and adjustment are definitely a good idea.

100% agree!!! Sometimes you just need the magic of the screw ;-) Simply love the technology and enjoy it when everything finally fits! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for everyone who’s working on it right now – BILLY remains my favorite shelf because despite these small challenges, it’s simple and functional! :-)
