ᐅ Why don’t BILLY bookcases always fit into a niche even when the measurements are correct?

Dear Community,
I am currently facing an issue with an IKEA Billy bookshelf I purchased, which according to the measurements should fit perfectly into a niche in my wall. The width, height, and depth exactly match the dimensions I measured beforehand. However, the bookshelf doesn’t fit properly in the niche – it either fits too tightly or doesn’t rest properly at the front, as if something is affecting the measurements.
I find it confusing that despite IKEA’s accurate specifications, the shelf doesn’t fit as expected. Has anyone experienced why this might actually happen? Could it be due to manufacturing tolerances, the wall itself, or the way the shelves are designed?
I would appreciate a detailed explanation to turn this frustration into a solution!
Best regards,

This is really impressive, how much you’ve already figured out here! 🙂
I once had a similar issue. I wanted to fit my BILLY shelf into a niche, but it wouldn’t go in properly at the front. What helped me was filing down the top of the back panel slightly, since it’s just a thin hardboard, which gave the shelf a few millimeters (fractions of an inch) more clearance at the front.
Of course, this is a bit of a DIY solution, but sometimes you just have to be practical!
So, don’t get discouraged – with a little bit of adjusting, it almost always works out 🙂

Oh yes, exactly! My experience is that a little bit of flexibility often works wonders! :-)
It is also important not to stress yourself out. The BILLY shelves are really great shelves, and with small adjustments, they fit almost anywhere.
If you want, you can also take the shelf apart a bit to work on problematic areas. It’s not that difficult.
Don’t worry, you can do it! 🙂

Have you ever checked angled settings with a folding ruler? That’s a great tip! Especially in older buildings, walls are often not perfectly straight. A simple folding ruler is usually not enough for this—you’ll need an angle finder or, even better, an app with a laser line feature if available.
Additionally, you can try checking the floor level with a spirit level—unevenness often hides there as well.
A summary for anyone facing this issue:
- Measure the niche at several points and at different heights
- Take all obstacles into account
- Check the floor level
- If everything fits, carefully adjust the shelf or make small modifications
This will significantly increase the chances that the BILLY shelf will actually fit.
