ᐅ Why does the Malm nightstand creak when it moves?

Hello everyone, I have a Malm nightstand from IKEA in my bedroom, and I’ve noticed that it creaks with every small movement, such as opening and closing the drawer or placing objects on it. I suspect that some materials might be rubbing against each other or that a joint is not fully tight. I’m interested in what specific causes might make the Malm nightstand creak during movement. Are there known weak points or common faults in this furniture series that could lead to the noise? Additionally, I would like to know the best ways to fix or prevent the creaking without causing any damage. Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!

Squeaking in IKEA furniture, especially in the Malm series, is unfortunately a common issue.

Basically, the furniture is designed for normal humidity and temperature conditions. If parts are slightly stressed or twisted during transport or extended storage, squeaking noises can occur until the material has settled.

It’s best to check if all the connections are tightened properly. IKEA usually accepts complaints if there is a manufacturing defect, but generally not for normal noises caused by material characteristics.

My advice: Report the problem to customer service and describe the situation in detail. Often, you will receive tips for troubleshooting or even spare parts.

Good luck!

I’m looking at it from a different perspective: Should a cheap piece of furniture like the Malm really creak? Sure, these pieces are affordable, but if I’m buying furniture, I don’t want it to squeak and creak with every movement.

I think many people just have unrealistic expectations for a piece of particleboard furniture.

That’s just an excuse the manufacturer likes to hear.

I would rather say this is a technical or quality defect that should be fixable with proper assembly and possibly some adjustments. IKEA, for example, shows that this can be done quite well with thoughtful design and clear assembly instructions.

Therefore, I would get angry and insist on a repair or replacement instead of accepting it.

Hey, I can only agree with the tips: tighten the screws, use wax carefully, and clean the drawer slides.

In my experience, squeaking is often caused by small dust particles or minimal wear, especially with plastic drawer slides. A quick "refresh" by cleaning often helps even more than replacing parts.

Sometimes I also use a bit of talcum powder, which behaves similarly to wax but is a bit finer.

Squeaking is annoying, but it’s usually not a sign of serious damage. So don’t worry 🙂

Hello everyone! 🙂

I found the discussion here really interesting – honestly, who hasn’t had a piece of furniture that creaks now and then? My furniture tells stories, and a little creaking feels like a living room concert to me! 😂

But joking aside, the important points have already been mentioned: moisture, material stresses, and loose connections are often the cause. Especially with Malm, which uses a lot of particleboard, this is normal.

I would recommend, if possible, not to over-tighten screws, but rather perform small maintenance tasks – retighten connections, apply wax occasionally, and ventilate regularly. This way, you can enjoy your furniture longer without any hassle.

And if something doesn’t fit right, a call to IKEA customer service never hurts. 🙂

Good luck to everyone turning creaky nightstands into a concert experience ;-)
