Hello everyone,

I have a Malm chest of drawers from Ikea that has recently started squeaking whenever I pull out or push in the drawers. I’ve noticed that the squeaking often seems to come from the area of the drawer slides, probably due to metal rubbing against metal. My question is, why exactly does the Malm chest of drawers squeak? Are there common causes known for this model, such as material defects, assembly issues, or wear in specific parts of the drawer runners?

I would appreciate more detailed explanations of how this problem occurs and, above all, what simple measures I can take to stop the squeaking without affecting the stability or function of the chest of drawers. Thank you in advance!

The squeaking is usually caused by dry rails. Simply clean the running rails and lightly spray them with a suitable lubricant (e.g., silicone spray). Avoid using oil, as it attracts dirt.

That is generally correct. Additionally, with the Malm dresser, the drawer slides are often not perfectly aligned or installed, which creates extra friction.

It is recommended to first check all the screws on the drawer slides and tighten them if necessary. Then clean the slides thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and apply Teflon or silicone spray, as these are specifically suitable for plastic and metal profiles.

Avoid using grease, as this usually causes the slides to attract dirt faster and worsens the problem.

Several factors should be considered when analyzing the cause of squeaking in the Malm chest of drawers:

1. Material and Construction: The Malm chest uses metal drawer slides with plastic rollers. Often, a combination of slight dirt buildup, aging of the plastic, and lack of lubrication causes the noise.

2. Assembly: Check whether the drawer slides are installed perfectly parallel to each other – even small misalignments increase friction.

3. Load and Usage: Heavy loads or rapid movements can contribute to squeaking.

4. Wear and Tear: After extended use, plastic rollers can become dirty or drawer slides can wear down.

To fix the squeaking, the recommended procedure is to fully extend the drawer slides, clean them, and remove any old lubricants. Then apply a lubricant such as silicone spray or graphite. Finally, check all screws and tighten connections if necessary.

These steps resolve the issue permanently in 90% of cases.

I would like to provide a brief guide on how to approach squeaking in the Malm dresser step by step:

1. Fully pull out the drawers and carefully inspect the bearings and slides.
2. Remove dust and dirt with a dry cloth (do not use water, as metal parts can rust).
3. Then, gently treat the running and guide rails with silicone spray, but apply sparingly.

This assumption is correct; however, plastic components are often involved – if dirty or worn, they increase the friction noise. Therefore, if noises persist after lubrication, check whether any roller bearings are damaged.

4. Check the screws on the slides and tighten them slightly, but be careful not to overtighten.
5. Test whether the squeaking is reduced after a few movements.

Summary: Usually, proper lubrication combined with verifying the assembly helps. If the squeaking remains, defective rollers are often the cause and should be replaced.
