Hello everyone, I recently started having an issue where the drawer of my Billy shelf sometimes gets stuck and doesn’t open properly. This doesn’t happen all the time, but rather sporadically, and I suspect it might be related to material expansion or possibly the way it was assembled. Interestingly, I’ve noticed that the sticking tends to get worse with changes in humidity or temperature fluctuations. Does anyone have a well-founded idea why the drawer might be sticking and what I can do to fix it? Maybe it’s related to the sliding mechanism or something else that can be easily repaired by myself. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Just a practical tip: Roughly clean the rails, apply silicone spray, tighten the screws. If it still sticks, lightly sand the affected edges. Done.

I think you’ve already narrowed down the problem really well! 🙂

Sometimes the sticking can escalate due to small factors — for example, if the shelf isn’t firmly secured to the wall and slight movement causes it to become misaligned.

Exactly! Sometimes it helps to slightly lift the entire piece of furniture off the floor, realign it, or attach new felt pads under the feet. After all, it’s not just about making the shelf look better 😉

Also: if the sticking gets worse in humid conditions, that’s basically "wood saying hello" — it’s normal, but you can counteract it by slightly loosening the drawer or adjusting the runners as needed. Usually, it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Good luck with it!

In summary: If the drawer in your Billy shelf is sticking, the following causes are usually relevant:

- Slight dimensional changes due to humidity and temperature (expansion and contraction of particleboard)
- Rails or shelf not perfectly aligned
- Dirty or unlubricated guides
- Excessive load on the drawer

My advice: Use a standard silicone spray, check the shelf position with a spirit level, ensure the drawer has a slight gap for clearance, and avoid overloading it. If the problem persists, you can carefully sand the edges slightly.

This approach usually works quite reliably.
