Hello everyone,

I have a question that probably concerns many of you who own Billy shelves with drawers: Why do the drawers on Billy shelves sometimes stick?

I have noticed that the drawers in my unit often move stiffly or even get completely stuck, even though I make sure everything is installed correctly. Are there common causes that one should be aware of? I suspect it might be related to the material properties or the alignment of the frame, but I’m not entirely sure.

Perhaps the drawer slides also play a role, or it could be connected to humidity levels?

I would appreciate well-founded advice that is not only easy to understand but also explains what to watch out for if you want to solve the problem permanently.

Hey DEOFRA,

first of all, great that you described the problem in such detail! 😊 The issue with sticking drawers in Billy shelves often comes down to the drawer slides being slightly warped or the shelf having settled in some way.

IKEA furniture isn’t made from solid wood but rather a combination of particleboard and laminate. This can expand or contract easily with humidity, which causes the parts to not fit as precisely as they did initially.

The rails also play a crucial role. Even if they are mounted just a little crooked, the drawer can quickly get stuck. Sometimes tightening the screws a bit or completely realigning the rails helps.

A useful trick is to rub a little wax or candle wax on the rails or glides – this allows the drawers to slide more smoothly. 🙂

All in all, it’s mostly a combination of material, installation, and environmental conditions. If you love your Billy, you have to give it a little love (and care) back! 😉

That’s a very valid point raised by Wesley.

I would divide the problem into three main causes and briefly explain how to fix them:

1. Material-related swelling: Billy shelves are usually made of particleboard, which reacts to moisture. This causes the wood to expand or contract, so the drawer no longer slides smoothly.

2. Installation errors: If the runner is not perfectly level or the drawer is not properly inserted, friction occurs.

3. Dirt and wear: Dust, small wood particles, or edge deformations often cause the drawer to stick.

Steps to resolve:
- First, check the alignment of the drawer slides, ideally using a spirit level.
- Remove all dirt from the slide and the drawer edges.
- Treat the slides with a bit of silicone lubricant or candle wax to reduce friction.
- Check the drawer dimensions: if the wood has swollen considerably, sanding down the side edges usually helps, coordinated with the available sliding space.

I recommend regular maintenance to keep the function long-term. The attitude of "install once, never check again" often leads to problems.

If desired, I can also provide tips for properly disassembling and reassembling the drawers.

Exactly.

Additionally, if the shelving unit wobbles slightly or stands unevenly, the drawer often gets stuck. So make sure it is stable and, if necessary, place shims underneath.

In short: align the slides, stabilize the shelving unit, and remove any dirt.
