ᐅ Why does the BILLY bookshelf squeak despite being assembled correctly?

Hello everyone, I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf from IKEA following the instructions correctly and tightening all screws properly. However, it creaks with every movement, for example when I pull out a book or even just shake the shelf a little. The noise seems to come from the joints, but there are no visible damages or loose parts.

Can anyone explain why the BILLY bookshelf creaks despite proper assembly? Are there possible causes related to the materials or design, or any tips on how to effectively eliminate the creaking?

Sure, sometimes the squeaking is caused by slight movements in the back panels or screw joints when they do not grip the material properly.

Also, check if all screws are seated correctly in the threaded inserts; sometimes something gets stuck there or pressure builds up, causing noise.

Thank you for the many helpful responses!

I will now try the following:
- Secure the shelf to the wall to prevent movement.
- Loosen and retighten the screws carefully, without over-tightening.
- Apply self-adhesive felt pads at critical contact points to reduce friction.

If none of this helps, I will look for a dry lubricant.

I’m also curious:
How often does squeaking occur with BILLY shelves for you? Is it rather an exception or almost standard? Are there “Monday models” (defective items)?

For me, about 3 out of 10 shelves squeak quietly shortly after proper assembly. This is often related to humidity, handling, and location. It’s not due to a manufacturing defect, but usually caused by the materials and design.

It’s important not to confuse noises with stability issues. If the shelf wobbles or feels unstable, you should also check the construction.

If the squeaking is caused by tightening the screws, it can help to secure the screws with a drop of wood glue inside the dowel – this prevents movement and eliminates the noise.

Squeaking with BILLY is not a one-off manufacturing defect but often normal.

If you want squeak-free assembly, regular tightening and proper installation of the back panel are usually necessary, as it greatly affects stability.

Perfect, I will start with the recommended steps and get back to you if I have any further questions.

Thank you for the clear and detailed information! It’s great to see such thorough discussions here, rather than just reading “squeaking = bad.”
