ᐅ Why does my Malm bedside table become wobbly after a short period of use?

cliffHello everyone, I have been using the Malm bedside table from IKEA for several months now, and I have noticed that it starts to wobble after a relatively short time. At first, it stands very steadily, but after just a few weeks, a noticeable instability develops, which appears as a slight tipping or swaying when placing something on the table or when it is lightly bumped.
I assembled the bedside table normally, using the supplied screws and connectors; the surface is on a relatively smooth laminate floor. Sometimes I have moved the table, but never on truly uneven surfaces, rather on hardwood flooring.
My question is: why does my Malm bedside table become wobbly after a short time? Are there structural weak points or common assembly issues that are typically overlooked? Could a brace be missing, or do the wooden dowels loosen over time?
I would appreciate any insights into the causes as well as possible solutions or improvements!

First of all: The nightstand is mostly made of particleboard with a thin foil coating, which makes it lighter and more affordable, but also more prone to warping and loosening of joints over time.
Here is a simple troubleshooting guide you can follow:
1. Check all screws and connections: Screws often loosen due to slight movements. Tighten them if necessary with the appropriate screwdriver or Allen key.
2. Pay attention to the wooden dowels: These fit into pre-drilled holes and can come loose if not glued properly. If you notice any parts wobbling, this could be a sign.
3. Inspect the floor: Even a smooth laminate floor can have uneven spots or dust under the nightstand’s feet. Use felt pads or small shims to ensure a stable base.
4. Avoid constant shifting. Every movement can loosen the joints.
If you follow these tips, you can often improve stability significantly. It’s also important not to overload the table or apply lateral forces to the top panel, as the material structure is designed for light loads.
Summary:
- Retighten screws
- Check wooden dowels
- Level the floor
- Understand material properties
If you like, I can also explain how to easily install special angle brackets to make the nightstand permanently sturdier. 🙂

Hey cliff! That’s a big topic! I also have the Malm nightstand here, and yes, I know the problem with wobbling all too well!!! It’s great that you posted this here; we can definitely help you!
That’s really important information! Especially with furniture like the Malm, you notice quickly if you’re too rough or if the screws aren’t properly tightened.
My tip: see if you can tighten your screws a little more, but be careful not to damage anything! Then do a kind of re-check after 2-3 weeks! After that, the whole thing feels solid again.
Yes, that could be the case! For me, I also attached a small L-bracket on the back – it really helps against wobbling! So: don’t give up, you can easily fix this yourself :-)
Looking forward to hearing your updates! Good luck with your furniture screw adventure 😉 !!

Maybe a brace is missing or the wooden dowels are loosening?

To objectively and conclusively address the issue: the instability of the Malm nightstand mainly results from its design and choice of materials.
Particleboard is susceptible to moisture and loads exceeding the intended static limits, which can quickly lead to joint shifts in everyday use.
The key connections in IKEA furniture of this type rely on wooden dowels and simple screws, which can loosen during use. Without permanent reinforcement, such as metal brackets or cross braces, this effect can accelerate.
The recommended countermeasures are therefore:
- Regularly tightening the screws
- Using light washers to better secure the threads
- Adding brackets or braces if possible
- Checking the floor for unevenness that can cause additional vibrations
In most cases, this problem occurs after a certain period of use with the Malm nightstand. It can only be fully prevented by structural modifications or using more stable types of furniture.
