aytekin521 Mar 2023 18:34Hello everyone, I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf following the instructions correctly, but I still notice it wobbles noticeably. I fixed the back panel with nails, all screws are tightened properly, and the floor is level. However, I can still feel a slight movement when gently shaking it.
Can anyone explain why my Billy bookshelf wobbles despite proper assembly? Could material tolerances be causing this? Or are common issues like an uneven floor or poor wall attachment often the reason?
I would really like to know which factors I should check to improve stability without adding extra structures. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Can someone explain why my Billy bookshelf wobbles despite being assembled correctly?Basically, there are several reasons why a Billy bookshelf might wobble even if it appears to be assembled properly. The main causes are usually:
1. Uneven floor: Even the smallest bumps or deformations in the floor can cause instability. Use a spirit level to check if the floor is completely flat.
2. Back panel attachment: The thin back panel made of HDF/tropical wood serves as a crucial element for stability. If it is not fully flat or securely fixed, it will not provide enough stability.
3. Wall fixing: Without securing the bookshelf to the wall, it can start to tilt and wobble.
4. Manufacturing tolerances: IKEA produces its shelves quite precisely, but there is always a certain tolerance in dimensions that can affect the overall stability.
My advice: First check the floor and the back panel. Reinforcing the back panel afterwards, for example by adding extra screws, can help. Also, attaching brackets to the wall provides the necessary stability.
Without a wall connection, movement-related wobbling of Billy bookshelves is always possible.

Even the smallest floor unevenness or deformations lead to instability. This is a very important point! I would like to go into more detail about the steps you should check to eliminate wobbling.
First, the surface on which the shelf stands is crucial. Even if your floor appears to be level, small unevenness may become noticeable due to different footprints in the corners or protruding wooden skirting boards (baseboards). It is worth measuring with a precise spirit level at various points on the floor. You might also detect slight variations in the shelf feet of only 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches) that still cause instability.
Next, I recommend carefully inspecting the back panel again: This wooden board is not only meant as a finishing element but significantly increases stability due to its square structure. During assembly, the instructions often suggest attaching the back panel with small nails – these should be firmly in place, and all corners of the back panel must fit flush against the side panels; otherwise, the shelf loses its shear strength.
Furthermore, the shelf should absolutely be secured to the wall whenever possible. Even if you say it still wobbles despite correct assembly, the IKEA instructions explicitly recommend fixing the shelf to the wall using suitable brackets to prevent tipping hazards. Especially for larger shelves or when intended for heavy use (books, heavy items), wall mounting is a critical component.
One more tip: Some users tend to tighten screws only by hand. Please also ensure that no screws are over-tightened or left loose, as this can increase movement.
My final question for your understanding: Does the shelf wobble when it is empty or mainly under load? Have you fixed it to the wall? Are there differences with varying floor inclinations in the room?

Could material tolerances possibly cause this issue?I completely understand how annoying wobbling can be, especially after careful assembly. I had a similar experience with my shelf.
Even though IKEA shelves are generally well-designed, the materials themselves, whether MDF or particleboard, aren’t entirely rigid. Combined with uneven floors and the lack of wall mounting, this can make the structure feel unstable.
That’s why it might help, as already mentioned, to screw the shelf to the wall. This not only increases stability but also prevents tipping—usually the wobbling stops immediately.

Without wall attachment, Billy shelves can always wobble when moved.I can confirm that as well. For me, it only worked properly after I used the wall mounts.
My personal experience is also that sometimes the back panel can be slightly damaged or not perfectly flat out of the box. Checking the back panel and, if necessary, replacing or readjusting it can help.
I wish you good luck stabilizing it! 🙂
