Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookshelf that I have attached to the wall multiple times exactly as described in the instructions. However, it still wobbles noticeably, especially when I apply light pressure to the top edge. The bookshelf is standing on a level floor and is not overloaded. The fasteners were installed with the supplied plugs and screws into a solid wall. My question is: Why does my BILLY bookshelf continue to wobble despite multiple correct attachments, and what can I do to truly improve its stability?

Is the shelf wobbly only at the top or also at the bottom? Check the connection between the floor and the shelf. If necessary, you can attach felt pads to prevent small movements.

Hello JUVENAL36, I’m familiar with your issue. Often, the wobbling isn’t due to poor fastening but rather the limited structural rigidity of the shelving unit itself. Here is a brief guide: 1. Check that the wall fixings are secure and prevent rotation. 2. Make sure the back panel of the BILLY is properly inserted and nailed in place, as it plays a crucial role in stability. 3. Verify that the shelf is positioned at a right angle – any tilt can cause it to lean. 4. Adding extra brackets on the backside might improve stability. 5. You can secure the base with a wedge or non-slip material to prevent slight movements. In conclusion, a combination of wall fixing, a rigid back panel, and base securing ensures a stable stand.

I think the problem might also be the type of wall mounting – a BILLY isn’t exactly a fortress 😉 You can often get even more stability with so-called 'L-brackets' fixed above, which you screw into both the wall and the shelf, then nothing will move at all! 🙂 Maybe the wall plugs are a bit loose or the drill bit wasn’t the right size. A little fine-tuning can work wonders.

This is an important point. Often, the back panel is just loosely placed and not secured enough. Although IKEA’s hardware and assembly instructions only mention inserting the back panel, to effectively resist shear forces, the thin nails—or even additional screws—must be firmly fixed in all corners. Additionally, over time, the wood fibers around the back panel can break out, reducing stability.

Another issue lies in the construction: some BILLY shelves have limited lateral stiffness due to the tongue-and-groove joint of the back panel. If the shelf is not positioned perfectly square or the floor is slightly uneven, this can encourage wobbling.

Do you mean that your shelf stands directly on parquet flooring or carpet, or have you placed something underneath? On carpet in particular, the feet of your shelf can slightly give way. Also: what kind of anchors did you use? For solid walls, expansion anchors are advisable; for hollow walls, cavity anchors or similar. Using the wrong type of anchor can weaken the fixing point.

Regardless of correct installation and fastening to the wall, you can reduce wobbling by reinforcing the supporting structure: 1. Screw additional brackets at the top or sides. 2. Secure the back panel with more nails or small screws. 3. Install an extra strip at the bottom as a floor insert to fix the position. 4. Check whether the floor is completely level; if not, use appropriate shims to compensate.

Multiple fastenings alone will not solve the problem if other factors such as material defects or floor conditions are not taken into account.
