Hello everyone,
I have a fairly simple Billy bookshelf from Ikea at home, and recently I’ve noticed that the doors make a clearly audible squeaking noise every time I open them. I’m mainly interested in understanding what might be causing this, as the bookshelf is not located in a particularly humid area nor is it subjected to heavy use.
I imagine it could be related to the hinges or the material properties, but I’m not sure if it might also be due to the assembly or if the lubricant simply wears off over time.
Do you have any experience or tips on how to permanently eliminate the noise? And could the squeaking have a negative impact on the functionality of the doors in the long term?
Thanks in advance!

I can imagine it might have something to do with the hinges or the material propertiesThat is usually exactly the cause. The hinges are probably no longer lubricated, or the materials are rubbing against each other. Simply spray some silicone spray or WD-40 on the hinges, and the problem should be resolved quickly.

Sometimes tightening the hinge screws a bit helps if they are too loose. But be careful not to warp the shelf!
If you want some extra quietness, you can also use fine wax; I once tried that on furniture and found it excellent.
Your Billy will be completely quiet again soon, guaranteed! ;-)

Could the squeaking have a long-term negative effect on the functionality of the doors?Basically, squeaking indicates friction on moving parts, usually metal on metal or plastic on metal. Over time, this can cause increased wear if not addressed.
Regular maintenance is therefore recommended. This includes:
- Cleaning the hinges of dust and dirt
- Lubricating with a suitable lubricant (silicone oil or special grease, not WD-40 as a permanent solution)
- Checking that the mounting screws are securely tightened
If you follow these steps, the squeaking should not only stop but also extend the lifespan of your Billy doors.
Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or excessive moisture, as these can damage the wood in the long run.
