Hello everyone,

I noticed that my Ikea Platsa shelving unit feels wobbly in some areas, even though I’ve assembled all the screws according to the instructions. Specifically, it’s a larger unit with several connected segments. The stability seems to decrease at the joints between the modules, and it sometimes creaks under load.

So I wonder: Why does the Ikea Platsa become wobbly in certain spots? Is it due to the design, the assembly, or are some components more prone to lacking the necessary rigidity?

I have already checked that all connections are tight and that the unit is not placed directly on an uneven floor. Maybe there are general tips on how to improve stability without completely rebuilding the furniture?

Looking forward to your experiences and insights!

Most often, Platsa wobbles because the corner connectors are not properly tightened. Check if all screws are secured. Missing back panels or incorrectly adjusted feet can also cause instability.

The most common cause of instability in Ikea Platsa units is a suboptimal connection between the individual modules, especially at the joints secured with dowels and screws. These connections are not designed to withstand strong lateral forces and may loosen over time.

Additionally, a continuous back panel or sufficiently reinforcing elements are often missing. The back panel plays a key role in providing lateral and tilt stability for these shelving systems.

Plastic connectors at the joints are also a weak point, as they can give way under load. One solution is to add corner brackets or to precisely align the feet to minimize stress and transfer it directly to the floor.

It’s worth critically considering whether Ikea deliberately allows a certain amount of 'flexibility' with this construction method to reduce costs. Furniture that is genuinely rigid naturally requires more expensive materials and longer assembly time.

I suspect that Platsa is designed for people who want to reconfigure their setup easily rather than rely on a solid, stable base. Therefore, wobbling might be part of the concept, not just a flaw or design deficiency.

This is a common issue with modular systems like Platsa. The joints are precisely the weak points because multiple fasteners come together here. The most important things to check first are:

- all screws are tightened securely, and possibly retightened after some time
- the back panel is installed correctly, as it plays a key role in stability
- the panels are properly aligned, with no wood chips or misalignments interfering with tightening

If these points are addressed, it often helps to install sturdy corner brackets at the edges to better transfer lateral forces.

One more tip: also check the weight on the shelf. Uneven loads or excessive weight can cause deformation and thus wobbling. Gently moving the structure can help relieve built-up stresses.
