Hello everyone,

I have been wondering for some time why IKEA builds the Malm furniture series with such delicate construction in some cases. I often notice that the edges on certain drawers or bed frames are very thin, and the overall build seems rather light compared to other furniture in a similar price range.

My question to you is: Why does IKEA design some Malm pieces so delicately? Is there a specific reason behind this, such as saving materials, design requirements, or functionality? I am especially interested in how IKEA balances appealing design, cost, and stability in these products.

I look forward to your insights, opinions, and explanations!

Hello coltjon,

your question is really well formulated and gives us plenty of room for discussion. Basically, the focus for IKEA furniture like the Malm series is indeed on a balanced combination of affordable price, appealing Scandinavian design, and simple manufacturing.

The delicate appearance is often not a sign of lower quality but a conscious design choice. Thinner edges and parts reduce the material weight, which not only saves costs but also makes transportation more efficient. Additionally, the slim design contributes to a modern, airy look that is very popular in today’s interior styles.

Of course, there are limits: for the necessary stability, they use a composite material, often particleboard with a thin melamine coating. Although this is not solid wood, it is sufficiently durable for everyday use if the furniture is handled properly.

Hope this helps you a bit already! 🙂 If you like, I can share more technical details about the materials and processes used.

That’s exactly what I wanted to say! IKEA really manages to offer modern furniture at affordable prices, and the sleek design makes the pieces much more stylish! 🙂 I think the Malm series especially looks quite sophisticated despite the thinner components. Of course, stability is important too, but if you handle them carefully, you get something really cool for the money!

Also, <quote=coltjon, post: c0n3b5, member: XXX>how IKEA balances appealing design, cost, and stability here</quote> is really clever, because using less material not only saves money but is also better for the environment. Great to think about! 😉

As a supplement and a somewhat more objective perspective: IKEA primarily uses particleboard coated with melamine resin for the Malm series. This material combination enables cost-effective large-scale production.

The delicate construction is achieved by optimizing the design to use thinner yet stiffer components. Both dimensionally stable joints and the gluing and pressing methods play a role in this.

This has two main advantages: On one hand, IKEA can reduce material costs by using less engineered wood. On the other hand, the weight decreases, which simplifies handling and transport for customers.

However, this also means that the furniture is not designed for extreme loads or particularly rough use. The delicate appearance has its limits in terms of durability, which is accepted within this price range.

Overall, the delicate construction is a compromise between design aesthetics, cost-efficiency, and functionality.
