Hello everyone,

I have come across a phenomenon that leaves me somewhat puzzled and hope to benefit from your knowledge and experience. It concerns the BILLY furniture piece from IKEA, which apparently warps when exposed to warm conditions. My question is: Why does BILLY warp in warm environments?

I have noticed that especially at higher room temperatures or in direct sunlight, the wooden parts on the sides tend to bend slightly or lose their original shape. I suspect this is related to the material properties, possibly the particleboard or the thin veneer layer, but I am not entirely sure.

Does anyone have a technical explanation or know more about this? What physical or chemical processes cause these deformations? And how severe has this issue been for you?

I look forward to your opinions and thank you in advance!

This is due to the thermal expansion of wood fiberboards. When heated, the material expands differently depending on how it was manufactured. This results in warping. This is normal for particle board.

Oh yes, I know that! This happens because such shelves are usually made of engineered wood materials like particleboard, which are very sensitive to temperature and humidity. The boards absorb or release moisture – and this causes slight swelling or shrinking.

If you place the shelf in strong sunlight, the surface can expand unevenly, and voilà: the whole unit warps. You could almost call it a little wood dance! 🙂

A tip: Avoid placing such furniture directly in front of windows with strong sunlight and try to maintain a consistent room temperature. This helps keep the unit more stable.

That’s really interesting! I once had trouble with a BILLY shelf that warped during the summer. It was quite frustrating because I thought this only happened with solid wood furniture.

I appreciate explanations like this because it makes you feel less alone with the problem. Maybe it will also help others wondering if their furniture is damaged – it’s simply a physical effect to be aware of.

Mocarel, could you tell us if your furniture was placed in a particularly humid area or if heat was usually the trigger? That might help us understand the issue better.
