I have had the BILLY bookshelf from IKEA in my apartment for some time now. At first, the white finish of the shelf was bright and fresh. However, after several months of use, I’ve noticed that the white gloss has gradually faded, and the surface now looks dull and slightly yellowed. My question to the community is: Why does the BILLY bookshelf lose its white shine over time? Are there common causes, such as material fatigue, UV exposure, or perhaps cleaning methods? And most importantly – are there any proven tips to keep the white surface looking bright for as long as possible? I look forward to your experiences and expert opinions!

It’s great that you’re approaching this topic so thoroughly! 🙂 I’m very familiar with the issue – after a while, the BILLY really loses that crisp white shine, I’ve seen the same with my shelves! This is often caused by two main factors: first, the UV exposure from sunlight, which can cause the paint or surface to darken and yellow over time. Second, everyday wear and tear comes into play – fingerprints with oils, dust, and cleaning products that aren’t ideal. But don’t worry, gently cleaning the surface with a microfiber cloth and mild soapy water works very well! And very important: avoid harsh abrasive cleaners, as they will just scratch the surface. Also, try polishing the furniture with wax designed for white surfaces – this often brings the shine back! Wishing you the best of luck :-)

Allow me to join the discussion to systematically explain the reasons behind the loss of white gloss on the BILLY shelf. First, the BILLY shelf is coated with melamine resin, which generally provides some resistance to everyday wear but is not completely immune to aging processes. UV light is indeed a significant factor, as it gradually discolors and chemically alters plastics and coatings—typically resulting in a slight yellowing and loss of gloss. Second, frequent mechanical wear, such as mild abrasion from dust particles or micro-scratches, can dull the surface. Third, improper or harsh cleaning agents can damage the surface protection and lead to faster degradation. My recommendations as a brief guide: 1) clean with pH-neutral or very mild dishwashing detergents and soft cloths, 2) avoid direct sunlight exposure where possible, 3) occasionally polish with special furniture care products designed for white surfaces. In summary, a combination of physical and chemical factors contributes to the loss of gloss.

That’s an important point! However, I would like to note that the quality differences between different production batches and the surface composition should also be considered more closely. Not every BILLY shelf will provide the exact same level of UV protection, especially since storage and transportation conditions before purchase can also play a role. Additionally, I have found that the use of improper cleaning agents is often a problem—more precise guidance from the manufacturer could definitely be helpful here. One more thought: was the shelf placed in a particularly humid environment? Moisture, combined with UV exposure, can cause the material to age faster. It would be interesting to systematically analyze such environmental factors to provide a more comprehensive answer.
