Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Billy bookshelf that makes an annoying creaking noise when opening the doors. My specific question is: why does the Billy bookshelf creak when the doors are opened? What causes this noise, especially after some use, even when there’s no visible damage?

Also, I would like to know the best way to fix this creaking, ideally without having to take the entire shelf apart or perform complicated repairs. Are there any specific lubricants or techniques you would recommend?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add that the causes of creaking in Billy are not only mechanical. Sometimes, the furniture makes noise when moved because the shelf is standing on the floor or the back panel comes into contact with other surfaces.

A small rubber pad under the shelf can already help. Even if the boards swell slightly due to humidity and shift a little, this can cause noise. Therefore, monitoring the ambient temperature and humidity is beneficial.

If you want something more stable, you can also consider installing damping pads. They make the whole thing run quieter but require a bit of DIY work.
